Folona is a company that was started by a food scientist driven to create her own line of food and dietary supplements that she feels confident giving to her own family. It is unclear how long this company has been around, but they certainly don’t have a huge range of products just yet. Having said that, we appreciate the foresight to create a product that includes both creatine and HMB. In addition, their product is non-GMO and vegan.
However, there are some downsides to this product, namely in the amounts of creatine and HMB. One serving offers just 1250 mg of creatine and only 410 mg of HMB
With only two ingredients in this product, the manufacturer has kept their creatine product neat and clean of any added extras. It is interesting to note that the form of creatine included in this product is Creatine HCl – a form that some say is absorbed more easily than Creatine Monohydrate. However, this form of creatine is relatively new on the market and there isn’t much clinical research on it. Taking this into account, we prefer the researched form of Creatine Monohydrate. With just 1250 mg of creatine, instead of the optimal 5000 mg per serving, we’re not sure how effective this is.
We also found the amount of HMB to be significantly lower than the optimal researched amount of 1500 mg – only 410 mg. Ultimately it is up to the consumer to decide whether this is effective for them or not, and while the manufacturer has no reviews on their website, we did find some positive reviews for this product on Amazon which gives us a strong indication that it can indeed be effective.
Folona Creatine HCl with HMB has no reported side effects and should be safe if taken according to proper recommendations. Additionally, Folona manufactures their products in a cGMP-certified facility in the USA, and has no GMOs. That said, creatine supplements are not recommended for people with impaired kidney function and if you have a medical condition or are nursing or pregnant, you should consult your doctor before taking creatine or HMB.
We believe that Folona is certainly on the right track when it comes to what makes an effective supplement. With so little evidence out there regarding the efficacy of Creatine HCl, it is quite a risky move putting only 1250 mg of this ingredient into a supplement. We also would have liked to see a higher amount of HMB as well as a satisfaction guarantee offered by the manufacturer. While we appreciate that this is a clean product that leaves out unnecessary ingredients, we feel the addition of Black Pepper extract could have given it that extra push. With all being said, we think Folona Creatine HCL with HMB is a good supplement but it falls short of our top pick.
